How Will The Cousins Trade To The Pelicans Affect The Playoff Race?

The Pelicans gave up Tyreke Evans, Buddy Hield and Langston Galloway for  DeMarcus Cousins.  Cousins is a top ten player in the NBA.  Cousins will join Anthony Davis making them the top two big men in the NBA.   Could be the top frontcourt with two guys averaging 20 points per game. The Pelicans  now have two big men to build around.  Pels are 23-34 and 2.5 games out of a playoff spot.

The two big men now must learn to play with each other.  Davis usage rate is about 32% while cousins is 37%.  Cousins is great with assists and should continue to give the ball up.  The problem could be both men work in the same  area of the court.   New Orleans had one of the worst offenses in the  NBA this year and that should improve now.  They have Jrue Holiday still at the point.   The Pels defense had been good this year and while Cousins is not known for his defense this could still be a plus for the Pels.  Davis may have to defend away from the basket.

Even with the addition of Cousins the Pels are still a longshot to make the playoffs. But with that said I think the Pels are not finished trading.  They may move Terence Jones before the deadline on Thursday.   The Pelicans will try to sign Coins to an extension beyond next year.  It will be interesting to watch as the Pels now do have a better shot at making the playoffs.
